Mountain Bikers Warm Up During Poison Spider Bicycles Spring Thaw 2011

Renee and Holly thawing in MoabWhat were you doing March 4, 5, 6?  Hopefully, you were here with us in Moab at the Poison Spider Bicycles Spring Thaw 2011.  We were stripping down, one leg warmer at a time, exposing that pasty winter skin to desert sunshine, riding, partying, waking up the sleeping urge to cycle.

Friday night featured cool  beverages and buffalo sliders at the Love Muffin Cafe. Saturday’s weather was perfect for a full day of riding on free 2011 mountain bike demos from Yeti Cycles and Kona Bikes.  After the traditional pancake breakfast served in style by Magpie Adventures, Thawers took bikes out for laps on the sweet variety of trails and slickrock at the Moab Brands Trails Area.  Newly opened trails include the technically challenging Deadman’s Trail, as well as the fun and swoopy Lazy EZ Loop.  In between laps, riders could nosh on delicious hot pasta and cool salad at the party scene between the Yeti and Kona vans, compliments of Pasta Jays Restaurant of Moab.

People came to ride with us from Green River, Wyoming, all over Colorado and parts of Texas, California, Arizona and a few other states.  There were kids and road bikers checking out fat tires.  There were first timers, enthusiasts and a couple of pro racers blending together to talk about suspension lengths and wheel diameters, as if size matters.  There were people who have come every year since forever, and folks stopping by just to see what the fuss was about.

After the day of riding, everyone gathered for dancing and lots of free schwag at Frankie D’s Bar & Grill in Moab Saturday evening.  Prizes were earned by answering trivia questions if your number was chosen.  The grand prize was a Yeti DJ Dirt Jumper Frame, but there was lots of Poison Spider schwag and some Rider Mel’s Mountain Bike Guide to Moab books.

The Sunday morning gathering was at Amasa Back Trialhead, with a light “hangover” breakfast presented by Rim Tours owner Matt Hebberd.  Yeti Cycles offered demos for the Amasa Back group ride and Thawers chose their poison from options that include Jackson’s Trail, Rockstacker, and Pothole Arch, all outstanding and challenging trails to wake up the hibernating mountain bikers for a new season of fat tire fun.

And true to the promise of the Thaw, the sun is bright and warm in the desert now, spring has truly sprung.  All we need are more happy bikers on all our trails, new and old.  Come to Moab and show some skin.

Thaw out with Poison Spider and Yeti Cycles!

Spring Fever In Moab- Poison Spider Bicycles’ Spring Thaw And Gran Fondo Moab

Winter in Moab. You walk out to the middle of Main Street in front of Poison Spider Bicycles, because you can, with no fear of being run over, because there’s no traffic. You face toward the south, your gaze falling on snow covered canyon walls, a winter wonderland. Sad, you turn around till you’re facing north, looking at the south faces of the same canyon walls and yipee! All you see are red dirt and rocks. It looks warm and inviting. You get an instant spring fever willy. Your mind fills with ideas of warm wind on bare skin, lungs expanding with pedal strokes, two wheels below and a helmet on top. Smiling, you side step back indoors so as not to get a glimpse of the snow behind you.

Hold on to that happy thought! Keep in mind that the Poison Spider Bicycles Spring Thaw event is right around the corner. Make plans to be in Moab for free mountain bike demos from Yeti Cycles and Kona Bikes for three days, March 4-6, 2011. The snow should be a vaguely unpleasant memory by then, with all the desert trails open and dry. There will be free guided rides, food and drink, parties in the mornings and parties at night.  Smiles, sunshine and schwag.  Feeling good, good food and fat tire fun.  Check this website for details, if not now, then soon.

Whilst suffering from spring fever, start thinking skinny tires.  It’s time to train for the Gran Fondo Moab on May 7, 2011.  Big steep hills, both up and down are waiting to challenge you and your road bike on the LaSal Mountain Loop Road.  Talk it up to your friends at spin class and on the chairlift, mention it at cocktail parties, the morning coffee club, and PTA functions.  Bring everyone you like to ride with and come to Moab to test your fitness on one of the best and most beautiful road rides anywhere.  Enjoy an organized ride with aid stations along the way and van support for emergencies.  Race your friends or the whole field, but be eligible for prizes even if you don’t hurry, because the Gran Fondo Moab is all about fun and your own chosen challenge.  Make the commitment.  Sign up online today.  Keep that spring fever alive.
