Event Distance:
For 2010 Gran Fondo Moab will only have one route. In future years we will have shorter distances.
Gran Fondo Moab- 60 miles/ 5500 feet of climbing. Gran Fondo means “Big Ride” This route may not be big in distance but it is truly a memorable ride if not downright epic. After completing the Gran Fondo Moab I think you will agree it is a “Big Ride” and very challenging. You will be left tired and spent! After riding many events in the states and Europe I still find this route to be in my top 5 rides. You will not find the spectacular views and terrain this course has to offer in many events anywhere. The Gran Fondo Moab route is what will make this event memorable.
Event Start:
The event and Vendor Expo will start at Moab’s City Park called Swanny Park. Swanny Park is located in downtown Moab at 400 North 100 West. The park is a 7-acre park with a large playground, two barbecue grills, covered picnic tables, a covered gazebo, lots of wide open green space and big, old shade trees. The park is a short ride from Moab’s downtown hotels. Please ride to the event start as there is limited parking available. Lunch-Results-Awards will also take place at Swanny Park on Saturday starting at 11:00 AM .
Event Finish: *** Start and Finish are not the same places***
The route finish is at Old Spanish Trail road after a steep uphill. You will then go around a round about for a short sprint to the finish line. The finish is near Old City Park 4 miles south of town. The beautiful 21 acres park is located on Old City Park Road in Spanish Valley. There will be a finish aid station located at the park with light refreshments, water and sports drinks. Lunch will start at 11:00 at Swanny Park in downtown Moab. It is a 4 mile mostly downhill ride back into town. (if you ride back to town your total mileage for the day will be around 65 miles) The best way back to town and Swanny Park is via Spanish Valley Drive.
Route Time Limits: 6 Hour Time Limit (7 am- 1 pm)
The Course is open from 7am- 1pm with timing. If you do not make it to the Finish Line before 1 PM your time will be listed as 6+ Hours. Due to the finish having a Closed Road we need to have it reopened to traffic by 1 pm. All Sag wagon and Police support will still be on the course after 1 pm to help any riders.
Awards-Results:
We are currently working on the awards for the event. There will be great awards and a raffle. You will get one free raffle ticket with your registration for the event. You have to be present for awards and raffle to get your prize. Results will be posted at Old City Park when available. All final results will be posted at Swanny Park on Saturday for Lunch and at Poison Spider Bicycles.
FAQ’s (this will be updated regularly as more questions arise)
Which direction is the course running?
The course will be going clockwise starting from Swanny City Park heading towards the Colorado River road going to Castle Valley. For more info. go to the course page on this site.
What support is offered?
While this is a supported ride we encourage you to start with two FULL water bottles and the energy food you would normally carry for a big ride. We will have aid stations with food, water and sports drinks. The first aid station will be located about 20 miles from town. There will be another aid station close to the top of the climb. The last aid station will be near the event finish at Old City Park. There will also be mobile tech support for minor bike help but mainly for flats along the route.
